Self-catering

The guest kitchen is always open, and is well equipped with tea, coffee, salt and pepper as well as a good selection of basic (non electric) cooking utensils, an oven and stove, and a small fridge. There are a few shops in the village where you can buy basic ingredients (including fresh local cheeses), but it is a good idea to bring most food with you.

We have a light, airy dining room with views straight out into the trees.

Eating out

There are a couple of good options for eating out nearby.

  • The Seven Miles/El Progresso Women's Cooperative serves Central American-style food (and sells local handcrafts and gifts!) from a small shop in the middle of the village – 0.75 miles from Checo Hill Farm. They're open for lunch and evening meals, and are very friendly!
  • The First Stop restaurant (at the junction of the Chiquibul and San Antonio roads, on the way to the Mountain Pine Ridge) offers local specialities including burritos, garnaches, tostadas, rice and beans, etc. They're open from 6am to 8pm every day and are about 2.5 miles from Checo Hill. (They can deliver, too...)
  • A couple of families in the village also offer traditional Belizean meals by arrangement. We can organise this for you if you're interested – it's a great way to enjoy local food and good company.

(You can also call into Blancaneaux Lodge in the Mountain Pine Ridge to try out the excellent pizzas, made with organic ingredients grown at the lodge itself... A good way to add a touch of luxury to a day exploring the wilder parts of the forest reserve!)

Lounge

Our lounge in an excellent place for relaxing - well equipped with comfortable chairs, a small library of reference books about the natural history of the area, and a selection of novels to read while you are here, or to swap with your own books.

Purified drinking water is always available in the lounge: we recommend that you refill your bottles here to save on waste!
